Barkley-Smith’s practice is painting, informed by an appreciation of the nature of materials and the mechanics of process gained through experimentation and investigation. In pursuit of new creative challenges and ideas, valued motifs act as catalysts and are an important ingredient in the development of subject and form, in mostly abstract paintings.
His practice is influenced by a love for modern and contemporary art, and pop culture keenly observed. Currently Barkley-Smith is exploring around the notion of a ‘tipping point’ – the point at which forces prevail and change is inevitable; a concept apt to a world that is precarious and seems to teeter on the brink often. His work is concerned with who we are and how we increasingly wonder about the world we inhabit and beyond.
